Ugrasrava Das Shares his Intimate Thoughts on Mayapur

Photo of Ugrasrava Das first lived in the mud floor huts along the boundary wall and eventually moved into lotus building in 1973, the same year as Srila Prabhupada. He has been here since the very beginning and has had cherished darshan with His Divine Grace while Mayapur Dham grew up to become what it is today.

One sunny afternoon, while sitting outside on couch, Srila Prabhupada exclaimed "Why is it that no Bengalis are coming, because this is such a beautiful temple." Now he would be so proud to see all of the pilgrims that come every day to see Lord Caitanya's birthplace".

Srila Prabhupada mentioned to Ugrasrava Das that he was building Mayapur for the Indians because they were losing their religion. He wanted to utilize the white boys and girls to attract them back. "It's all in Krsna's service. This is for nothing, we don't charge, but we want to get people out of the cycle of birth, death, old age and disease." The temple itself he said would help accomplish Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's teachings, and it should be seen all the way from Kolkata.

Ugrasrava Prabhu can already see the effects that the Dham has had on visiting people. He states that even within a year he has seen everyone, Indians and westerners alike, chanting the maha mantra in the temple; last year just a few were doing it in a corner. "Even if one just comes in, takes darshan and sees the effort and progression then Srila Prabhupada's mood will affect you no matter what. ISKCON cannot be an institution without soul and compassion."
